SUMMARY:NSC Fireside Chat: U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm
DESCRIPTION:NSC CEO Andy Van Kleunen joins Secretary Jennifer Granholm to hear how the U.S. Department of Energy is implementing federal investments and partnering with agencies across the government to develop our nation’s clean energy workforce. \nAugust 2022 the Biden Administration passed the Inflation Reduction Act\, making historic investments to protect and improve land\, water\, air\, and health in underserved communities. Along with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act\, these investments hold the potential to create and transform millions of jobs. The Department of Energy’s focus now is to channel these federal dollars into our local communities\, particularly those that are disadvantaged\, marginalized\, and underserved. These same communities have limited access to high-quality\, inclusive skills training to fill clean energy jobs. \nHear from Secretary Granholm about the steps her agency is taking not only for cleaner\, smarter\, and more affordable energy services\, but to also support high-quality\, inclusive skills training that will leverage the talent of America’s workers to power a clean energy future. \nModerator: Andy Van Kleunen\, CEO\, National Skills Coalition \nFeatured Guest: U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm\, U.S. Department of Energy

SUMMARY:Illinois 2022 WIOA Summit
DESCRIPTION:What do we know about workers’ digital skill needs & how to support them? \nDigital skills are in-demand for jobs across industries. Home health aides need to enter patient information via iPads; retail store workers are using price-change and inventory-control apps; construction workers have to submit work-order changes using mobile apps for blueprint technology; and truck drivers don’t get paid if they can’t navigate their online payroll system correctly. But not all workers are confident in their digital skills — even if they work in jobs that require them. What does the data tell us about workers’ digital skill needs? Get an overview of key data from the national OECD Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC) and find out how one Illinois organization is responding to digital skill needs among workforce system staff\, jobseekers\, and adult learners alike. \n  \nSpeakers: \nAmanda Bergson-Shilcock\, National Skills Coalition \nMichael Matos\, Illinois Digital Learning Lab/CCLC

SUMMARY:Upskilling American Workers for Middle Skill Jobs Requires a Strong Foundation
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, April 21\, 2022\, from 11am to 12pm Eastern\, please join AIR for a presentation and discussion focusing on a new policy report from the ETS Center for Research on Human Capital and Education called Buttressing the Middle: A Case for Reskilling and Upskilling America’s Middle-Skill Workers in the 21st Century. This report explores the extent to which technology and automation are changing the nature of work and explains why education and higher-order skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving are becoming increasingly important to meet the level of cognitive demand in middle-skill jobs. The authors argue that these higher-order skills rely upon a strong foundation of literacy and numeracy skills which is often overlooked. \nThis webinar will highlight the report’s findings on: \n\nCurrent U.S. adults’ literacy and numeracy skill levels using data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) and student reading and math skill levels from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)\nThe increasing skill demands for many middle-skill occupations using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ O*NET\n\nPresenters will discuss the need to bridge the divide between the kinds of skills workers need and the skills many currently have. Also presented will be a theory of action designed to improve the literacy\, numeracy and digital skills of adults that will help put them on pathways for future educational and occupational growth. \nRegistrants will be given the opportunity to submit questions during the webinar. \n  \nSpeakers: \nPresenter: Dr. Irwin Kirsch\, Director\, Center for Global Assessment\, ETS \nDiscussant: Mr. Paul Fain\, Journalist\, The Job Newsletter \nModerator: Ms. Amanda Bergson-Shilcock\, Senior Fellow\, National Skills Coalition

SUMMARY:Credential Mobility and Transparency: Pathways to Licensure and Employment
DESCRIPTION:The Council of State Governments (CSG) invites you to a webinar to discuss professional licensure\, obstacles to mobility and transparency and solutions for efficient and inclusive credentialing practices. CSG’s Occupational Licensure Project\, funded by the US Department of Labor\, has sought to remove barriers for professional licensure.   \n  \nObtaining a professional license can be confusing. Differences among professional licensing laws across states create barriers for those looking to obtain a license as well as for professionals relocating across state lines. Differences in education\, training and license requirements can be difficult to navigate. During this webinar\, representatives from Credential Engine and the National Skills Coalition will discuss credential transparency and strategies to make the process of obtaining a professional license clear\, efficient and inclusive. \n  \nSpeakers: \nJeannine LaPrad\, National Skills Coalition \nJeff Gran\, Credential Engine
