SUMMARY:Training and Hiring Strategies that Lead to Good Jobs for Immigrant Communities and English Language Learners
DESCRIPTION:California is home to nearly 11 million immigrants – accounting for almost 27 percent of the state’s population. Roughly 2.5 million immigrants are undocumented\, meaning less access to social safety net programs\, financial assistance\, and job security.  Throughout the ongoing pandemic\, immigrants\, including English language learners (ELL)\, have been impacted the most – facing systemic barriers that have greatly limited their access to supportive services and opportunities to gain critical skills training. Although there have been some improvements and investments made in the state’s budget\, there is still much work to be done to support immigrants and English language learners. \nJoin Skills for CA to hear from experts in the field who will share more about the unique barriers these communities face and strategies that can increase access to economic mobility in today’s labor market. \nSpeakers:\n\nJoseph Villela\, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights\nSasha Feldstein\, California Immigrant Policy Center\nMarc Philpart\, PolicyLink/ Alliance for Boys and Men of Color\nZima Creason\, CA EDGE Coalition\nAnna Alvarado\, CA EDGE Coalition

SUMMARY:Using Data to Drive Credential Quality and Transparency - C2ER Conference/LMI Institute Annual Forum
DESCRIPTION:View the slides from NSC Senior Fellow Rachel Vilsack’s presentation at the 2021 C2ER Conference/LMI Institute Annual Forum\nUsing Data to Drive Credential Quality and Transparency – June 9th\, 1pm ET\nEducation and training have become essential to our nation’s economic mobility and growth following an historic pandemic that disrupted the lives and livelihoods of students and working learners. More than 80 percent of all jobs in today’s economy require some form of education or training beyond high school\, and virtually all new jobs created since 2008 have gone to workers with at least some postsecondary education. Economic downturns are traditionally the time that prospective students look to pursue training\, and recent survey results show that it is likely to be in a non-degree program to acquire the skills they need for work\, or to obtain a certificate or license. This session will explain how two states are using labor market data to define quality credentials and making data on credentials transparent to learners through Credential Engine and to provide more pathways into quality postsecondary education and training as a part of their recovery strategies.

SUMMARY:Libraries and Workforce Development: Connecting the Dots between Your Patrons and Public Policy
DESCRIPTION:Download Slides\nThe Covid-19 pandemic has thrown millions of Americans out of work and challenged libraries to find creative ways to help jobseekers and adult learners navigate an uncertain and fast-changing landscape. This webinar will feature national policy experts who will provide big-picture context\, data\, and resources to help library staff to strategically connect with local\, state and national workforce policy conversations. \nParticipants will get an overview of major federal policies that support workforce development and find out how libraries fit into this conversation. Presenters\, including Amanda Bergson-Shilcock and Jessica Cardott of National Skills Coalition\, as well as Larra Clark of the American Library Association and Stephanie Holcomb and Liana Volpe of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University\, will share recent data on American workers’ digital skill gaps and identify opportunities for libraries to use this data in educating policymakers about the need for additional funding and the roles libraries play in this space. Presenters will also provide practical recommendations for how librarians can make their voices heard in the workforce policy arena and help to narrow racial equity gaps in skill-building opportunities. This is the first in a planned series of events focused on public libraries\, workforce development programs and services\, and economic recovery.
