DOL awards community college grants.

September 15, 2012

On September 19, the Department of Labor (DOL) announced $500 million in capacity-building grantsto community colleges and consortia of community colleges and universities to support education and job training aimed at dislocated workers. Grants were awarded to 27 individual institutions and 27 community college and university consortia.

The Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant program was created as a part of the broader TAA reauthorization under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and is jointly administered by the Departments of Labor and Education. Congress provided $500 million in funding for the programs in each of Fiscal Years (FY) 2011-2014 – for a total of $2 billion – under the 2010 budget reconciliation law.

By law, states that do not receive awards will still receive at least $2.5 million per year in funding over TAACCCT. The agencies have announced they will work with the 25 states that did not receive awards under this announcement to develop qualifying community college projects.
